Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Mechanisms

Authors: Clarissa Cunha Santana, Camila Santos Silva, Paula Rocha Dantas Silva, Scarlet Torres Moraes Mota, Theolis Barbosa and Tonya Azevedo Duarte

Abstract: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). It affects mainly the lungs, but it may also occur in extrapulmonary sites. TB is a world challenge due to its high burden and the emergency of drug-resistant MTB. MTB employs a wide range of resistance mechanisms to escape the action of the drugs currently in use for TB treatment. These mechanisms can be classified as intrinsic or acquired and are related to mycobacterium genetic diversity, strain transmission, and irregular treatment. The surveillance of resistant MTB is of high importance to guide treatment recommendations and control measures.

Identifying Potential Hurdles to Adequate HIV Treatment Adherence, Santo André/SP, Brazil

Authors: Elaine Monteiro Matsuda, Ana Beatriz Ortega Nishiyama, Laura Ballesteros Bao, Ivana Barros de Campos, Victor Oliveira Chiavegato and Luís Fernando de Macedo Brígido

Abstract: Overcoming potential limitations for retention can improve the health of people living with HIV and favor epidemic control (Undetectable=Untransmittable), resulting in fewer AIDS complications that also impact scarce health resources. Adherence to exam collection, appointment and medication withdrawal was associated with better viral suppression (viral load < 50 copies/mL, p < 0.001) with lack of time off work or financial resources to go to the outpatient clinic pointed out as major limiting factors for adherence. Exemption of the public transport tariff and expansion of pharmacy’s opening hours could improve adhesion, an investment that may save costs in dealing with complications of AIDS and new infections.

Sudden Vision Loss: More than Just an Ophthalmic Diagnosis! A Case Report

Authors: Bhakti Padghan, Shashikant Anil Pol, Shreeya Kulkarni and Rushika Patel

Abstract: Tuberculosis is a public health concern worldwide with India being the highest (26%). However, tuberculosis of paranasal sinuses was unusual even in countries with a high prevalence of the disease. Isolated involvement of sphenoid sinus by disease is a rare entity. A 66-year-old male patient presented with the chief complaints of sudden diminution of vision in the left eye. The left eye vision was finger counting at 3 meters and that of the right eye was normal. Non-Contrast Computed Tomography of the nose and paranasal sinuses showed an ill-defined soft tissue density in the left sphenoid sinus abutting the left optic nerve with erosion of superior wall of left orbit.
